Moving Toward The Light is the first episode in the fifteenth season of the CBC drama Heartland. It originally aired October 17, 2021.

Synopsis

Amy must help a skeptical performer, and her pair of matched liberty horses work together again; Jack unexpectedly buys Mitch's herd of cattle; Tim returns from his trip with a surprise for everyone.

Plot

Amy struggles with Lyndy attending a week-long preschool prep camp. Amy meets and works with Renaud Perez's head trainer, Sylvie from Dark Horse, whom he hired after Amy turned down the position. Fred Garland looks to convince Tim and Jack to buy Mitch's herd. Lou is upset that Mitch did not tell her he was selling the herd, as well as Aspen Grove. Tim and Jessica return from Peru and make a big announcement, which surprises the whole family. Jack and Lisa make important decisions about the future. Sylvie works with Lyndy, Jack, and Harley on a surprise for Amy's birthday. Lou struggles with moving on from both Mitch and Peter.

Trivia

• Despite Staying the Course being his final appearance, Mitch still appears in the recap for this episode. He is the second character to pull this off after Ahmed.
  • The former does appear in a few inaudible phone calls and is mentioned a couple of times.
• Mitch had sold the heard, but decided to give it to the Flemings considering his close connection to them.
• This episode takes place at exactly the half year mark from Staying the Course and a few thing happen.
  • Tim and Jessica get married while in Peru, but of course don't remember as they lost track of time.
  • Lou has a hard time trying to move one with Mitch per her phone call with Peter before the wedding day.
    • She even tries to call Peter towards the end, but opts out.
  • Parker somewhat moves back with her mom, which might be the reason she does not appear in this episode.
• Amy says it's been 10 years since she found out about liberty horsing, which is technically correct as the episode for this season's premiere takes place 10 years from season 5's, which aired in 2011.
• This is the first season premiere that Georgie does not appear in.
• Lyndy does a few things in this episode: she goes to a camp, makes a surprise for Amy, and draws a picture of her family with Ty as the moon looking down on everyone.
  • Speaking of Ty, his two appearances in this episode are shown through archival footage.
• Jack asking Sylvie and Lyndy what's going on when seeing something mysterious resembles Homer doing the same to Lenny and Carl in Homer The Great, the only difference being one character saying a different response after one character (Lenny/Sylvie) says "It's a secret", as well as the number of times it's done. In The Simpsons, Carl says "Shut up" twice and then Homer for the third while the former drinks. Here, Lyndy says "Don't tell" and it's only done once.
• Amy's birthday is celebrated in this episode.
• The reason for Juniper's outbursts with Zeus in the picture was due to Sylvie's clinging to him after the latter horse suffered an injury. Sylvie riding Juniper is what solved the taming of him with Zeus in the picture.
• Remi makes a cameo in one scene where Amy looks for Sylvie.
• Archival footage of the liberty horsing from the season 5 finale is shown, where the characters shown are Amy, Jack, Ty, Lou, and Tim while Shane and Miranda are cut entirely.
